Reflection for Wednesday, 21 December 2022; Gospel: Luke 1:39-45

 Do the Good You can!

As we continue preparing for the coming of the Emmanuel, God with us, the readings of today specially the Gospel pericope that the Mother Church presents us in this table of the word, it gives us a direction to irrigate our eagerness in waiting for our savior. We are all invited to follow up Mary’s wonderful example of kindness, affection and generosity in set out of our comfort zone to do good to others.

Yes! This is so wonderful, this is the missionary spirit that we religious today, must learn from Mother Mary in leaving our comfort zone and set out to help, to serve those in need. Certainly, an aged woman with six months of pregnancy and until the time of birth needs a lot of care and help, and I am sure that Mother Mary might have the same thought. All this Mary’s kindness and generosity, led me to reflect in what St. Francis of Assisi said, “Wherever there is a good to do, do it”! It was not easy for Mary set out and travel in the hill country where Elizabeth lived. It was probably seventy miles of distance from Nazareth, it is a week’s walk from Nazareth to the territory of Judah, and yet Mary goes freely to support her ageing relative and probably share with her the excitement and worries of pregnancy. We may see that Mary was probably eager to know the certainty of her aged cousin’s pregnancy, which the angel Gabriel had mentioned, all to show her the possibility of her own pregnancy.

Therefore, with this account of the Gospel of Luke, we can learn deeply how Mary’s presence is powerful in ones’ life. The joy of Elizabeth and her unborn son in being before the Most Blessed Sacrament and His Tabernacle was so amazing. The joy made Elizabeth to address Mary with a formal biblical beatitude, “Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb”.
